How to change your staff training from snooze worthy to oozing with excitement!
Nothing switches staff off more than an inexperienced or ill-equipped trainer giving a one size fits all workshop. This generally results in more telling than doing. With a lack of activities for participants it’s fast track ticket to snoozeville; and yet this fatal flaw is something I see in workplace education all the time.
If you want to excel in learning and development it starts with knowing your audience. By correctly gauging their current level of expertise within the topic you are presenting, you’ll be able to customise activities that fill that gap. You can employ many activity methods to help you fill gaps in your delegate’s knowledge. Consider:
- A job tool, such as a checklist
- Buddy audits
- An online refresher, or,
- Staff debriefs
A common mistake in workplace education stems from in-house managers training staff and employees. This often results in a lecture, rather than a facilitated workshop or training day. One of my often-used expressions is telling ain’t teaching!
Your staff will switch off as soon as they begin to feel that they are back at school. The behavioural transformation you wish to see as an employer will never take place, as the staff who really needed the assistance aren’t getting the training they need to effect change. It’s a #loselose situation!
How to fix it:
Use the Fishbone Diagram in a workshopped situation. Where you identify the problem, and then assist your delegates to solve it using the 4Ps, People, Plant/Place, Policies, Procedures.
This activity helps to facilitate your staff in finding their own answers, they feel empowered, involved in decision making, and are ultimately engaged with your training day and workshop. They will also retain the keys they have found to solve a problem more effectively than they would have had a manager been stood upon a soapbox spouting snooze worthy policy.
You may be surprised to see that your staff already have the answer to the problem you are trying to solve with your workshop or training day. You may also find that the problem may not stem from where you think it does.
