At some time in your career you will find you are stuck in your job, or in your business. Some of you will get stuck finding a job, starting a business or changing your career. School leavers and graduates get stuck knowing what courses to take or what to do when they grow up.
Despite all your hard work you don’t know what to do, where to go and who to confide in. With the day to day grind of finding and keeping new customers or keeping managers or your team happy, it can all get a bit eat-sleep-work-eat sleep-work.
Remember nothing changes if nothing changes and this post includes 3 tips to help you effect change immediately. As a mentor I like breaking things down in to simple questions, that way nothing feels too overwhelming and it’s possible to kick start action. Any action is better than no action – right?
Here are 3 questions to ask yourself on a daily basis when you’re in business.
Q1 – Who do I need to call today?
- Call a prospective client
- Call a potential new staff member
- Call a supplier
- Call someone you admire and ask for some time with them
Q2 – What can I delegate?
Do you really need to spend your time doing everything? Even if you’re in business on your own there are many virtual and outsourcing options which you could consider. While it takes time you could take on a protege, apprentice or intern to help you with some tasks. If you already work with a team, are you still trying to do everything yourself? You may need to let go a little and allow your team to do their jobs. If lack of trust is holding you back think about what you can do to trust just a little, before trusting a lot.
Q3 – What am I avoiding?
As business people and professionals there are always calls we don’t want to make or conversations we don’t want to have. Examples are;
- Debtors who owe you money for thirty, sixty, nighty days or more.
- A performance review with a team member.
- Suppliers who aren’t delivering.
- A boss it’s hard to get time with.
But sometimes we just have to front-up and have those conversations, so pick one a day and get on with the job!
If you ask yourself these three questions every day for a month, it’s amazing what a difference it can make to your business or work life. Why not just try it and see?
